POP CULTURE - The new era is here (but we already knew that, right?)

Who hasn’t heard those famous lyrics that go like “Ups, I did it again…” or ’Cus we are living in a material world” or a recent one “Po-po-po-poker face po-po-pokerface”? The point of this question is transcendental for the objective of this humble article, which is to let the reader know that we are living in a society that was created for us, and no that wasn’t a writing mistake, this society is being created “for us”.

Some may say, well, the society is built by all of us, with our interests, our favorite activities, our traditions, our people, but in this new era of communication, I have to tell you that that’s a huge lie we’ve been told over and over. In the actuality, the biggest companies are trying to get into our head all of their products, even if it’s a toaster or a microwave, or even a pop singer, their objective is to sell, but what is ours? We have been told over and over what is “popular”, what is part of the “mainstream”, and some of us fall for that false idea of reality, because in a normal world, we are all free to decide what is it that we want to hear, buy, read, watch or eat. The point is that another person is making the choices for us, they dictate what’s popular, which album is good, which music should we listen to and most important, who’s going to make it and who isn’t in the music industry.

I think we should really check the path that are choices are following and just ask ourselves “Am I listening to this music because I like it or because I’ve been told so?” Remember that we are all free to love the sounds that we want, even if it’s rock, metal, country or pop, we are able to choose, decide and say “Hey, your material is good and I’m going to hear your music” or “Even when you’re popular, I totally hate your music and that´s ok”.

JOJO – Where was she? In the f*ckin’ dark???

20 year old Joanna Blagden, better known as JoJo released back in September 2010 a mixtape which is like a little taste of what her next album will be, it was called Can’t Take That Away From Me and it includes 11 songs, of which we’ve only had the chance to hear the first single In The Dark.

As we stated before, her next album will be released in 2011 and it will be called All I Want Is Everything. According to JoJo, the mixtape is way different than what the album will be. The thing is that so far, we are totally in love with her single In the Dark, so there’s two possibilities: one, the album has even greater songs and makes us go to the store and buy it immediately OR she fails in delivering a different sound.

We really hope JoJo makes the right choices and presents us an incredible All I Want Is Everything that luckily will become part of our most-played list. While we wait, here’s the official video for In The Dark which is not the greatest thing ever, but we still love the song.

LADY GAGA - OMFG! Are these the songs from Born This Way????

So everybody is waiting for the official release of Born This Way, the only info we have confirmed until now is that the first single will be released on the Grammys night on February 13th and that the album will be available until May 23rd, also we know that Born This Way and You And I are confirmed songs, and we know that there's a song that talks about "a hooker in a church corner" (that's on Gaga's twitter, check it!).

Since Lady Gaga confirmed the new album, there was a supposed tracklist of Born This Way, and we really didn't payed any attention, but... now it seems more real than ever. Just recently a new tracklist was revealed and it even has which songs are going to be singles. So judge for yourself and keep on waiting for Born This Way.

ONEREPUBLIC – For God’s sake, who doesn’t love secrets?

Self proclaimed genreless American band OneRepublic has been out there for quite a few years now, sharing with us songs that are beyond amazing. Lately we’ve been kind of obsessed with their latest album Waking Up which has some gems in there like All The Right Moves, Marchin On and (our currently obsession) Secrets.

As some of the current big artists (Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj…) OneRepublic became successful thanks to some small thing called MySpace, maybe you’ve heard of it, but the real surprise came when they jumped into the mainstream with their unbelievable successful hit song Apologize from their first album Dreaming Out Loud.

I’ve to say that we’re currently waiting (our nerves are making us crazy) for their new album which according to guitarist of the band Zach Filkins, they are ready for another album.

Meanwhile, we have the official videos for some of our most played songs from OneRepublic. Enjoy:

LILY ALLEN – Why??? Why she does that to her career???

According to Lily Allen, the rumors that stated she was gonna quit music, are sorta true. Just a few months ago, the British singer said that she’s still writing music but just not for herself. Actually all 2010 she was in a hiatus respect to her own music career, because she focused a lot of her attention on her own record label, her store, in a possible acting career and in getting pregnant.

Since the moment I first heard Smile from her first album, I totally fell in love with her music, a couple of years later I heard The Fear and I really could see Lily Allen being a great singer/writer for quite a long time, so it’s very sad to think that we’re no longer gonna hear new music from Lily, I mean, of course we’re gonna hear the stuff she writes, but it will not be the same without her voice.

For those of you that appreciate the good moments of Lily’s career. Here are my favorite videos of her, hoping that she reconsiders that thought and decides to make a new record for herself:

THE TING TINGS – If Hands is the single, is Body the album?

As some of you may now, Hands is the lead single of the second album Kunst (which means "art" in German) by The Ting Tings. It seems like ages go when The Ting Tings started preparing Kunst and nope, it’s not ready yet, but we have the great fortune of being able to hear their first and second singles. We can hear Hands and We’re Not The Same, which according to the band have a darker side than the songs that were part of their previous album We Started Nothing.

In my opinion, so far I think the band made a wrong choice with their second single, sadly, the songs from We Started Nothing really sounded much better than what their new material does, but I guess we’ll have to wait until we have the album in our hands and so we could be able to really judge their music. At this moment, we recommend The Ting Tings to search for a better sound, maybe not the same as their previous album, but definitely something better than the one that belongs to the direction they’re taking for Kunst. Because I LOVE Hands but We're Not The Same not so much.

There's an official video for Hands, but it seems Youtube doesn't want you to see it on my blog, so here's the acoustic version of the song (still great) and We're Not The Same, the two lead singles from  The Ting Tings Kunst:

BEST OF 2010: Katy Perry

Even though I’m almost completely sure that you already know this, because you all have heard her music, I’m gonna say it: Katy Perry is an American pop singer born in Caifornia, we are not supposed to say this, but… she’s 26 (don’t tell anyone ok?). One more thing, this year she became Ms. Brand, for those of you who don’t who is Mr. Brand, he’s an English comedian (mainly), Russell Brand and Katy Perry got happily married in India just outside the Taj Mahal (nothing special, right?), so now they’re living the perfect married life.

Respect to her music career, it was an unbelievable year for Katy Perry. She unveiled her full-of-hits album Teenage Dream around August and since that day she hasn’t stopped releasing hugely successful singles. Her lead single (I have previously talked about all of those three songs, so if you would like to read about them check the link next to the song) was California Gurls (ft. Snoop Dogg) (HERE), then Teenage Dream (HERE) and finally Fireworks (HERE). Even though I’ve already told you about this songs, I never mentioned you how great did those songs did on the market, and (I mean great with large $$$ attached to it). Her three singles peaked to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and had made Katy go platinum in countries like Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Australia.

Congratulations to Katy Perry on her incredible year and as with Rihanna, we can only wish her the best for 2011!
